Read time: ~5 minutes
Intro: Most “won’t start” stories begin with petrol that’s been sitting too long. The fix isn’t complicated or expensive—it’s a habit. Label what you store, rotate on a simple rhythm and give the engine fresh fuel when it matters. Do that and first-go starts become the rule, not the exception.
Label and rotate
Date every container when you fill it. Months later you’ll know what to use elsewhere and what remains suitable for the generator. Rotate older fuel into lawn gear where appropriate and keep the generator supplied with fresh stock for outages and trips.
Stabilise and store correctly
Stabiliser slows degradation during downtime by inhibiting oxidation and moisture absorption. Store containers upright in a cool, ventilated spot away from sunlight and ignition sources, and secure them during transport to prevent spills.
Monthly rotation routine
- Five-minute test run to circulate fresh fuel.
- Check dates on containers and top up what’s needed.
- Inspect cords, cover and storage area while you’re there.
Safety note: Handle fuel with care and follow local rules. Operate generators outdoors only and never in enclosed spaces.
