Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Why do I need to earth the generator? And what happens if I don't?
Circuit breakers can cause the generators to leak 'power' and the best way to ensure user safety is to provide a path of least resistance through a stake in the ground, and not anywhere else.
The need to 'earth' a generator is simply a redundancy designed to minimise risk.
Why do some generators have batteries?
A number of Blackstone generators have electric start up, which is driven by an on-board battery.
These batteries allow electric ignition, helping you start your Blackstone generator by turning the key – as compared to manually pulling the recoil starter.
Blackstone generators featuring electric start up include:
Blackstone 3500
Blackstone 5500
Blackstone 9000
All generators, including those models with electric start, have pull cord or recoil start up, so you can still start your generator, should the battery go flat.
When choosing a generator, we still suggest looking for a model that has the largest continuous power rating you require, rather than buying a model for its electric start.
Does the Blackstone Generators have an IP rating? If so, what is it?
The electrical sockets on all Blackstone Generators have an IP rating of IP44 but should be sheltered with weather where possible.
How often should I change the oil?
Blackstone generators are engineered for domestic use. However issues can occur when engines are poorly lubricated or incorrect oil has been used.
To ensure your power generator remains reliable and trouble free, we recommend regular oil checks & changes to ensure that the oil is clean and free from carbon deposits and pollutants.
Can Blackstone generators be used for commercial purposes?
Our Blackstone generators are built tough and stand ready to deliver power to devices & appliance within their power output range for portable domestic use.
Commercial use of Blackstone generators – while possible – is not recommended and can impact warranty due to workloads these settings require, along with RCD fitting & job sites requirements.
What do I do when I need power but the inclement weather?
Our generators are designed for outdoor use due to the petrol engine. To use in wet locations we would suggest setting up some cover that affords some rain protection, but still leaves the generator room to breathe, and always outdoors with extraction.
Can I connect this to my house as the main supply?
Connecting generators to your home as a primary power source is not recommended. This type of connection would have to be hardwired and completed by licensed and certified electrician.
We recommend the blackstone generators connect to your appliances directly or via leads, for quick & easy connections that ensure future portability .
Whats the difference between electronic ignition and recoil start up?
The only difference between generators with 'electric start up' are that you only need turn a key, compared to recoil starters which require manual pulling.
All Blackstone generators with electric start up also have pull cord starting, ensuring you can still power up if the batter runs flat.
Blackstone generators that feature electric start include:
Blackstone 3500
Blackstone 5500
Blackstone 9000
While the convenience of electric start up is an appealing feature, the best approach when considering which generator to buy, is a generator that suits your power needs; looking for a model that has the largest continuous power rating that you may require.
You can use our generator power calculator to determine how much power you need.
